Swim Wales Open Masters Short Course Meet – Newport 3rd December 2022
December 3, 2022
Swim your own race says Jim, be confident as well.
Wise words headed and then failed by Terry in his first event of the session. The 400m Free.
Each heat was seeded and Terry was in the middle lane of his heat and some 18 seconds ahead of the second seeded swimmers entry time. So when the start happened and this other swimmer shot off, what did Terry do, he went after him. Well at 250m Terry had caught him up, his 200m split was well under where it would be and that’s when the legs gave in and with a racing heart rate, Terry had no choice other than to stroke it out to finish the last 6 lengths. Still with a happy time and gold in his age group, he should not have raced that pesky youngster of some 29 years with a rouge entry time. Lesson learned.
The poolside air temperature was very cold and the swimmers were turning to putting on fleeces, dry robes and bobble hats as well as thick socks.
Session 2 and Terry was back in the water in the 50m Breaststroke, going to try to break his own club record, he was just short by 0.47, yet still achieved another Gold.
Jevgenijs Putans also swam the 50m Breaststroke and was 0.71 away from his own record and moved up the seedings form 4th to 2nd. Terry was in the 50m Freestyle in the same session, a way off the club record, (bring on the Presidents Cup), yet was thrilled with the Bronze medal.
Session 3 and the 100m Breaststroke, Terry winning his age group, 0.31 away from his own record and Jev finished 2nd in his age group, just over a second away from his record set just over a month at the Nationals in Sheffield.
In the final session, Jev, proudly watched on by his Wife and Daughter, achieved Gold in the 200m Breaststroke, not only in his age group, but overall, and a consolidation Bronze in his newly acquired second stroke in the 100m Freestyle.
