Swim England Masters National Championships 2022 – Day Two
October 29, 2022
This started with a mixed 4x200m Freestyle relay, Laura Cooke, Mark Straw, Claire Moore and Simon Mellor. Silver medal place and, yes you guessed it, another club record.
The gruelling 200m Butterfly followed with Harry Middleton finishing 6th in his age group. Everyone that does this event deserves a medal.
50m Backstroke next and both Greg Adams and Simon Mellor were attempting to break their age group club record, both were just outside with Greg an agonising 0.07 seconds away in 5th and Simon in 7th. Huw Jones was just 0.09 away from his own record and Harry Middleton 0.4 outside his. Charlie Madden was also another one missing it, his by 0.52. Great going by all 5 swimmers though.
The 100m Breaststroke followed with Kerry Black and Jengenijs Putans in the same age group, Jev breaking his club record by almost a second to finish 6th, Kerry achieved 18th. Charlie Madden also competed in this event to finish 13th.
Finishing off this session were Greg, Ian Daniell, Ian Smith and Simon Mellor in the 4×50 Medley relay. This was in a strong category and they did extremely well to finish in 6th place and with a new club record.
Session five and a few more records were achieved.
Starting with the 100m Individual Medley, Kerry Black smashed his entry time by almost 5 seconds to finish 23rd, Ian Daniell just about matched his entry time with a 13th place, leaving Charlie Madden to take over two seconds of the club record and with a 13th place.
The 400m Freestyle followed with Mark Straw, Harry Middleton, Caroline Madden, Claire Moore and Clair Baynton all taking to the 16 length event, still known as a sprint event.
Mark was 10th and inside his entry time, he said afterwards that he could improve it with better turns, Harry was 5th, Caroline 5th, Claire Moore 4th, so close again, and Clair Baynton 9th.
This lead to session six.
The mixed 4x50m Free team, Laura Cooke, Mark Straw, Claire Moore and Simon Mellor, delightful with their Silver medal and club record.
Then the sprint event that is the 50m Freestyle. 42 heats for the Men and 40 for the Ladies. Ian Smith finished 20th, Greg Adams 15th, Ian Daniell 13th and Huw Jones 26th, but with his first of two club records. Charlotte Smith and Laura Cooke were the Lady sprinters, Laura missing out on a medal finishing 4th.
The final event of the session was the 200m Breaststroke. Kerry Black and Jevgenijs Putans competing. Kerry started well to finish 10th and Jev excelled throughout to just miss a medal, but break his own record, something he had been targeting and training for.
With the session finished, it was time for the squad to hit the town and visit Pizza Express. 24 hungry people, swimmers, partners, children (young adults) and a coach.
