Swim England South East Masters Short Course 2019
October 5, 2019
At the Masters Short Course Districts competition held on Saturday 5th October, 13 Bracknell Masters competed.
With Jim at the poolside for that extra encouragement and checking that his training was being followed through, a total of 12 Gold, 15 Silver and 7 Bronze individual medals were won by the Squad. In addition to a Gold for the Ladies and and Silver for the Men in the Freestyle relays.
The first pair of Gold medals were claimed by Jevgenijs Putans and John Williamson in their respective age groups in the 200m Breaststroke. John set a new BWSC Masters Record for his event, then followed it up with a Silver medal in the 100m Freestyle and a Bronze in the 100m Backstroke. Jevgenijs took Silver in both his 50m & 100m Breaststroke events.
The next event was the 50m Freestyle where Jo Raistrick, Mandy Johnson and Terry Wright were all 3rd in their age groups, Karen Leftley, Emily Goodwin and Dave Davenport were second in theirs. Terry, in-between time keeping, gained Gold in the 100m I/M. In that event, Mark Straw was also 2nd in his age group and doubled the Silver tally from the 200m Freestyle.
In the 100m Backstroke event, Huw Jones and Kirsty Johnson were dominant in both taking Gold, Huw triumphed again in the 50m Backstroke and 200m Freestyle and saw Silver in the 100m Freestyle. Kirsty also took Gold in her 10m I/M.
In the 50m Butterfly, quite a dash, Karen Bassett was victorious and Ian Smith did well in a busy age group to get Bronze. Karen saw Gold again in her 200m Freestyle and Silver in her 50m Breaststroke. Ian waited to the last event of the day, the 200m I/M for his Silver medal.
In what seems to the most popular event, the 100m Freestyle, Mandy, Karen Leftley, Emily and Dave Davenport were all second in their age groups. Dave’s time was an improvement on his current BWSC Masters record, he added the Silver from the 200m Freestyle to his collection, just outside his own record. As already mentioned, Emily was 2nd in her 50m Freestyle and with that went better in the 50m Backstroke to claim the Gold and for the Bronze medal to add to her collection a fine swim came from the 50m Backstroke. Mandy, for her third medal was 3rd in the 100m Breaststroke.
Always exciting, the relays and Bracknell fielded two Freestyle teams, Kirsty, Mandy, Karen L & Emily in the ladies who battled it out to beat their rivals for the Gold by 0.91 seconds. Huw, Terry, Mark and Dave had bit more of a battle, yet claimed the Silver behind their rivals, but a good distance ahead of Bronze.
The Bracknell Masters are now almost ready for the National Short Course Competition in Sheffield over the 25th – 27th October.
