It is with sadness that we have to share the news that Mike Daniell, of Bracknell Masters, lost his fight against cancer and sadly passed away this morning with his son by his side.

Mike was an honorary member of BWSC and represented the team for over 40 years. He was known for his love of the 200m Fly and previously held British and European records for all three distances in the Butterfly.

Mike only last competed on the 17th December 2017, just a month ago in our BWSC Presidents cup swimming in front of the whole club including the age group swimmers, 50m Butterfly, 50m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle.

Prior to that he represented Berkshire & South Buckinghamshire in November 2017 in the Inter-County Masters where at 77 years old he performed brilliantly in again in the 65+ 50m Butterfly, 50m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle events. Mike was a highly valued team member representing the county on numerous occasions over his swimming career.

In the Swim England National Masters in October 2017, Mike achieved silver in both the 100m Butterfly and Backstroke events and a bronze in the 50m Backstroke. Although fourth in the 50m Free, he lowered his age group best time by 2.41 seconds.

We are unaware of the funeral arrangements at this time.

At the Bracknell Masters Open Meet in March, there are plans, yet to be finalised, to celebrate Mike’s life, this will involve Butterfly Swimming for sure.
