GLLAM Masters 2017
September 9, 2017
Everyone remembers the thrill that came to London in 2012, that being the Olympic Games and the new sporting venues. Well, the stadium is now home to a Premiership Football club, but the London Aquatic Centre is still home to swimming. In 2016 it hosted the European Championships for both the Elite and the Masters.
Now to 2017 and it was the venue for the GLLAM Masters Swimming competition, their 9th annual event and first in this complex.
Karen Bassett and Terry Wright represented Bracknell and came away with four medals between them and three new BWSC Masters long course records. Karen has not been at the best of health and was so pleased to be back swimming, Terry had not been on holiday since May and had a solid three and a half months of serious training to use, he was targeting the BWSC Masters Records.
The event started with the 200m Individual Medley and both Karen and Terry were in the same heat. Karen did extremely well and given her lack of training she beat all her competition to gain Gold. Terry also swam well to achieve the gold medal and more importantly to himself, 8 seconds off the old Club record.
karen was straight back in the water in the next event, being the 50m Butterfly. Held at the start and perhaps cautious of her wrists, her reaction time to the gun was not her quickest, but she still managed to finish third in her age group.
Terry was next to swim in the 50m Breaststroke and this was a record attempt that had failed him twice this year, 0.02 short in January and 0.04 short in July. So when he finished and saw his time, being 0.65 under the record, a slightly reserved but double pump fist in the air was produced.
Karen and Terry both then swam in the 200m Free in the second session. Was it tiredness from the previous swims, reduced training , but Karen was not overly pleased with her time. Terry was much happier as he improved his own record by two seconds and in doing so also took another gold medal.
An extremely well ran meet. It also had Syncho, sorry, Artistic Swimming, in between the two sessions, Water Polo and fun relays at the end.
