Swim England Masters National Championships 2022 – Day One
October 28, 2022
282 Clubs, 705 Ladies entered 2773 events, 769 Men entered 3019 events and there were 647 team entries including some swimmers who only went to swim in relays.
BWSC had 5 Ladies and 11 Men enter a total of 67 individual and 7 team events.
It was going to be a busy three days of competition.
The first event was the 1500m Freestyle, Caroline Madden was first in the water and from the training it was obvious that she was going to beat her entry time of which she did by some 24 seconds, to add to that she finished third in her age group. Claire Moore was in the next heat and like Caroline, she too beat her entry time and with this she finished second in her age group and with a new Club Record. She also set a new record for her 800m along the way.
Clair Baynton then went in the heat after this and like the other ladies, she too smashed her entry time, hers by just over 48 seconds, 8th place too.
In the second session we had the 100m Backstroke, 200m Freestyle and the 4x50m Freestyle team events
Greg Adams missed breaking the club record by 0.03 and was 4th in his age group, Huw Jones took 0.33 of the club record and was 11th in his, Clair Baynton, fresh from her earlier 1500, beat her entry time by over 4 seconds and was 9th in hers.
Six swimmers took part in the 200m Freestyle event, Mark Straw, Ian Daniell and Huw Jones for the men and Caroline Madden, Claire Moore and Laura Cooke for the ladies. Claire just missed out on the bronze, but crept just inside her entry time, Caroline was just outside her time to finish 11th, Mark was 12th, Ian 16th and Huw 14th. This left Laura to take the first of many medals and records, this one being a bronze and 0.09 off the previous record.
Greg Adams, Simon Mellor, Ian Smith and Ian Daniell joined forces to finish 6th with a club record in the 4x50m Free. Clair Baynton, Claire Moore, Caroline Madden and Laura Cooke finished third in their relay event and another club record.
The 50m Breaststroke was the first event. Kerry Black took 1.4 seconds off his entry time, Jevgenijs Putans took 0.39 off his and with that was just 0.03 away
from breaking his own record, Charlie Madden was just under a second below his entry time to finish 14th.
Charlotte Smith was the only lady for BWSC to do the 50m Breaststroke and was pleased with her time and 19th place.
The next event was the 100m Butterfly. Ian Smith and Laura Cooke had been practising well for this event and the results proved just that. Ian was 6th with a time so close to that many, many years ago and Laura took another medal, Silver and another club record. Will they do it next year
The last event was the 4x200m Freestyle relays, regretfully Terry injured himself in the warm up and it was too late to change the Mens team as the declaration time was passed, for the Ladies, Clair, Claire, Caroline and Laura, achieved Silver from a fantastic relay and another club record.
In the evening, the team went to Zizi’s to celebrate.
